Executive Summary

GRUPO PETROIL, a Mexico-based petroleum and energy distribution company serving industrial and commercial clients through petroil[.]com[.]mx, was listed on Direwolf’s dark-web leak portal on October 27, 2026. The listing was identified via SOCRadar Dark Web Monitoring. Energy-sector targeting in Latin America by Direwolf is emerging, and this listing marks a notable escalation of the group’s Americas-region campaign. As a petroleum and energy distributor, GRUPO PETROIL represents the kind of industrial and commercial infrastructure that can attract ransomware and extortion activity, and its Mexican energy-sector profile extends Direwolf’s known geographic flexibility. Direwolf claimed 23 victims in the previous 60-day window. Its primary targeted sectors during this period were Healthcare, Technology, and Transportation, with primary geographies of the United States, Brazil, and Sweden. Other regional and energy-sector listings in this period include PTT Oil and Retail Business (Thailand/Energy & Utilities), Interseguro (Peru/Financial Services), Softruck (Brazil/Technology), and Port of Tanjung Pelepas (Malaysia/Transportation). GRUPO PETROIL differs from the group’s most frequently claimed industries but aligns with its demonstrated geographic flexibility and its recent energy-sector listing activity, making the claim consistent with Direwolf’s expanding targeting pattern rather than an isolated anomaly.

Technical Analysis

SOCRadar telemetry queried the domain petroil[.]com[.]mx and returned 9 records, all classified INTERNAL_AUTH_EMPLOYEE (category A). The compromised endpoints associated with these records include the Auth0 identity provider, Microsoft Entra (Azure Active Directory) endpoints, the Jira project management dashboard at jira[.]grupopetroil[.]com[.]mx, and corporate productivity services. Log dates on the most recent records are October 27, 2026 — the same day as the ransomware listing — with insert timestamps from the morning of October 27. This temporal alignment between fresh credential ingest and same-day disclosure is a pattern observed in rapid-deployment ransomware operations. The same-day log insertion and ransomware listing is the most operationally significant indicator in this dataset. Auth0 and Microsoft Entra credential compromise alongside Jira dashboard access suggests an attacker who had, or rapidly obtained, identity-provider access and project-infrastructure visibility before or during deployment. While the telemetry does not by itself confirm the exact intrusion path used in this incident, the exposure of identity-provider and project-management credentials may materially support ransomware operations, particularly when disclosed concurrently with a leak-site listing. These are not low-risk credentials: energy companies with smaller security teams should treat Auth0/IdP and project-management infrastructure credential exposure as critical-priority remediation when accompanied by a concurrent ransomware listing. The immediate priority supported by this assessment is an audit of Auth0 and Microsoft Entra access logs for the October 26–27 window. Organizations in comparable positions should also maintain continued dark web and stealer-log monitoring for the affected domain, conduct proactive credential-hygiene checks including password rotation for the exposed endpoints, and review multi-factor authentication coverage on identity-provider accounts to reduce the risk of credential-based access supporting ransomware deployment.
